Orthodontic Jobs

An orthodontist examines, diagnoses, and treats abnormalities in the development of jaws, position of teeth, and other dental-facial structures. For this, he/she plans treatment using cephalometric, height, and weight records, dental X-rays, and front and lateral dental photographs. The orthodontist then designs and fabricates appliances, such as space maintainers, retainers, and labial and lingual arch wires, to alter position and relationship of teeth and jaws, and to realign teeth to produce and maintain normal function.

Orthodontists straighten teeth by applying pressure to them with braces or retainers. Orthodontists use a variety of equipment, including X-ray machines, drills, and instruments such as mouth mirrors, probes, forceps, brushes, and scalpels. They wear masks, gloves, and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.

Orthodontists in private practice oversee a variety of administrative tasks, including bookkeeping, and buying equipment and supplies.

In the beginning, orthodontists may work more hours as they establish their practice. Practised orthodontists often work fewer hours. A significant number continue in part-time practice well beyond the usual retirement age. Most orthodontists are solo practitioners who have their own businesses and work alone or with a small staff. Some orthodontists have partners.
