According to an online survey conducted for USA TODAY and CareerBuilder.com by Harris Interactive, only 16 percent of US employers expect to cut workers in the first three months of 2009.

An additional 16 percent expect to add workers, while 62 percent anticipate a steady payroll.

Job cuts may be more widespread in the Northeast, where 19 percent of those surveyed said they planned to reduce the number of full-time staff during the first quarter.
