Verizon workers may go on strike if demands on their new contract agreement are not met by an August 2 deadline.
The unions that represent over 65,000 Verizon employees are demanding a five percent annual wage increase, expanded medical benefits, and limiting the number of outsourced jobs.
With less than a week to go before the contract expires, several thousand telephone workers affiliated with the Communications Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers assembled at Verizon headquarters, located in lower Manhattan.
The timing of the alleged strike is posing a challenge for Verizon as it prepares to launch its FiOS digital TV, phone, and Internet service in New York City this week.
