Tempel Steel Co. was set to close down its plant in Chicago and shift all of its work to its location in Monterrey, Mexico. However, the city wanted to hear none of it.
The city and state fought hard, along with an economic-development group known as World Business Chicago, to keep the employment of their residents.
The incentives for the company included assorted tax credits and “Enterprise Zone” benefits. The estimated value is about seven million dollars.
Tempel Steel Co. was founded in Chicago and employs around 2,000 people worldwide, with operations in Canada, Mexico, China, and India. The company will create an additional 350 jobs in Chicago, making a total of 800 employees in the area.
