Over the past year, Massachusetts added an estimated 1,900 state workers to its payroll, even as Governor Deval Patrick warned of potential budget cuts.
It is reported that the majority of new hires were in the state’s prison and highway departments. According to the head of the state’s Human Resources Department, Paul Dietl, the $5.3 billion payroll is similar to that of past years.
However, the president of the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation does not agree. Michael Widmer believes that the state’s payroll is “very troubling” considering its economic situation.
The job cuts would help deal with the one billion dollar deficit in the state’s budget.
