With no hurricanes in Florida this time around to keep residents running away, it looks like jobs are storming off instead. According to a survey conducted by Manpower Inc., Gainesville’s hiring forecast is among the weakest in the nation, especially for the next three months. However, during October through December, the survey discovered that 13% of companies plan to
hire more employees, while another 20% expect to maintain their current staff. The best lines of work for job prospects are said to be in non-durable goods manufacturing. Between July 2007 and 2008, Gainesville led the state in job growth with
2,200 new jobs, but what hurt the area was the increase in unemployment, which jumped up to 4.9%.
