Georgia’s unemployment rate rose last month to 6.3%, the highest rate in 15 years for the Peach State. Unemployment is currently 1.9% higher that the same time last year, a significant increase.
Georgia entered a recession in March, according to economist Jeff Humphreys of the
University of Georgia.
State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond urged those seeking jobs to “keep their chins up,” and use the department’s career centers. Easy for him to say, he has a job.
Georgia lost 37,000 payroll jobs over the last year. Three-hundred and eleven thousand Georgians are looking for work. Metro Atlanta accounts for a little more than half the jobs lost. Atlanta has lost 20,100 jobs since August 2007.
