On EmploymentCrossing
Europe's leading physicists swapped their lab coats for their best suits this week for the official inauguration of a multi-billion dollar machine designed to shed light on the "Big Bang” and to answer that eternal question, why is there gravity?
There was just one problem -- the Large Hadron Collider itself is out of action for several months, after a faulty electrical connection caused a massive helium leak.
Nevertheless, the ceremony went ahead as planned, with French Prime Minister Francois Fillon in attendance and a special "molecular buffet" concocted by famed Catalan chefs Ferran Adria and Ettore Bocchia.
The chefs are renowned for cuisine which involves breaking down elements to produce surprising combinations, using sometimes unexpected textures, temperatures and cooking techniques.
The ceremony at the Organization CERN also featured exhibitions, an audiovisual concert and the music of Philip Glass.
The LHC took nearly 20 years to build at a cost of five-and-a-half billion dollars.
