The Chicago-based manufacturer of military aircraft, civilian jetliners and surveillance systems, said the layoffs at the Integrated Defense Systems facility will affect managers, and salaried and hourly workers.

The Wichita plant, which provides limited support for Boeing's commercial aircraft business, currently employs about 3,000 people. Work at the facility includes modifying Boeing aircraft for international customers.

The cuts at the facility follow the winding down of work on tankers for Italy and Japan, and the delay in a US Air Force for a fleet of tankers.

Boeing's integrated defense systems unit, based in St. Louis, Missouri, has 71,000 employees.
