In September and October, New York lost 13,900 private-sector jobs. But the unemployment rate dropped from 5.8 percent to 5.7 percent. In October 2007, the unemployment rate was 4.6 percent.

Over the past year, private-sector jobs decreased 14,100 across the state.

In the Syracuse area, private-sector jobs increased by 400 over the past year, while the unemployment rate rose to 5.6 percent.

In the Utica/Rome region, private-sector jobs decreased by 1,200, and the unemployment rate climbed to 5.2 percent.

The Greater Binghamton area lost 800 jobs over the past year. The unemployment rate rose to 5.3 percent.

By comparison, the nation's unemployment rate increased to 6.5 percent, up from 6.1 percent in September.
