Unemployment in the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown region climbed to 5.4 percent in October, according to the latest report from the Texas Workforce Commission.

Approximately 152,300 Houstonians were looking for work in October, out of a total civilian labor force of about 2.8 million. That's an increase from September's count of just over 144,000 jobless.

The unemployment rate in October was up from 4 percent a year ago.

Meanwhile, Texas overall continues to fare better than most states on the employment front, according to the TWC.

The Lone Star State added 23,000 jobs in October. But unemployment in Texas as a whole increased to 5.6 percent, up from 4.3 percent in 2007.
