The soon-to-be-opened US Census Bureau office in Knoxville, Tennessee will create approximately 1,000 jobs for the region, which is experiencing its highest unemployment rate in 20 years.

The jobs start in late February with an hourly wage from $9.75 to $15.75.

The Bureau's Tony Jones told reporters that "most of the jobs are either part time, or they're temporary full time jobs."

Jones says "what they will do is go out into their local communities and really get us a good master list of every address in their community."

The United States Census is a decennial census mandated by the United States Constitution. The population is enumerated every 10 years, and the results are used to allocate Congressional seats, electoral votes and government program funding.
