With the city of Phoenix, Arizona facing an estimated $250 million shortfall out of a $1.2 billion budget, the mayor has announced 1,000 job cuts within city government.
Initially, Mayor Phil Gordon said 1,200 positions would be cut, but aides later lowered that figure.
This marks the first time the city has acknowledged how many of its 14,000 jobs could be eliminated. Most of the staffing cuts will be through attrition.
Gordon wants city workers to skip raises for one year and take one day off a month without pay, but labor groups are skeptical about these measures.
Richard Clewis, of the Administrative, Supervisory, Professional and Technical Employees Association, said he understands the severity of Phoenix's fiscal challenges but wants city leaders to evaluate every option before cutting staff.
The organization represents 3,600 city workers.
The cuts will go into effect in March, city officials said.
