On EmploymentCrossing
A bipartisan group of Mississippi lawmakers is suggesting that the state freeze vacant jobs and cancel raises to save money, but major education funding will be spared.
The suggestions will be considered as the full Legislature convenes in January to decide how to divide up $5 billion among state agencies for the fiscal year that begins in July. A final budget won't be approved until next Spring.
Most of the 14 committee members support such proposals, and Republican Governor Haley Barbour recently suggested them in his budget.
Like most states,
The budget committee is recommending freezing 4,600 state jobs that are vacant and putting more money into the state employees' retirement system.
The state has about 30,000 employees, in addition to 35,000 teachers.
