AT&T Inc., one of the largest telecommunication service providers, said Thursday that it plans to eliminate approximately 4 percent of its total work force, about 12,000 jobs.
As a result of growing economic pressures, the cuts have been done in an attempt to create a “more streamlined organizational structure.”
AT&T says that despite the need to reduce staffing in certain areas, it is still growing in other business areas and continues to add jobs. Wireless, video and broadband segments of AT&T continue to add openings and fill new positions.
In accordance with union agreements or existing policies, many AT&T employees who are laid off will have access to severance pay. And according to Dallas-based AT&T many non-managerial employees have varied levels of job protection based on union contacts.
