November saw the biggest loss in jobs in a generation with the nation's employers cutting 533,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics has reported.

The US unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent with 420,000 leaving the labor force in November who were previously working or seeking work in October.

Losses were widespread, affecting construction companies, financial firms, factories, retailers, and other industries.

December 1974 was the last time the US saw such a sharp job decline in a single month. That time, though, a severe recession was just ending and our current recession seems to only be getting worse.
