Employers in the state cut 23,000 jobs last month, the most since October 2001, according to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Illinois’ unemployment rate held at 7.3 percent last month, the highest since November 1993 and up from 5.3 percent in the same month last year.

According to Chicago Business, manufacturing companies cut 6,000 jobs, the most last month, and Construction and trade, transportation and utilities corporations dropped a total of 5,100 employees over the month.

Employers in educational and health services added a total of 1,600 jobs.
