With the job market waxing and waning these days, consider something a little grungier than the office cubicle, like the septic business, doody arena (yes, picking up dog droppings), or fertilizer industry.
James Dillard, who owns Dillard's Septic Service, makes more than six figures a year and charges $200 to $300 a visit. Two graduates from the University of Virginia, Jacob and Susan D'Aniello, run DoodyCalls, a service for picking up dog poop. The business has expanded to 26 franchisees and will gather more than $2 million in revenue this year. And Bill Doyle fell into the fertilizer industry 33 years ago and just last year, made $1 million in salary.
Filthy rich suddenly takes on a whole new meaning.
