The job market looks positive for college graduates with degrees in business, finance, engineering, and computer science, says Chicago-based employment-service firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Even graduates who majored in English and liberal arts have good chances of finding post-college jobs. After all, more and more, companies are hiring ''soft skills'' employees, those who can demonstrate ''the ability to communicate ideas, think critically, and respond positively to feedback,'' says Challenger.

However, according to Laura Katen, president of Katen Consulting, "not all...liberal arts majors possess such talents." Because of this, she helps students improve their skills (from interviewing to etiquette) and teaches them that in the end it's not about them; it's about the company.

"You need to articulate what skill you have and how it's going to benefit the company," Katen says.
