Being the CFO of a company is a huge responsibility. Only either the truly insane or the truly skilled seek out these job openings. Due to their nature they are few and far between and the job employment requirements are very steep. After all being the chief financial officer to a company is perhaps the most powerful and important position next to the operator of said company.
The CFO's main duties are to monitor and manage all financial aspects of the company. Everything from filing taxes to keeping track of who gets paid and how much is all part of the job. That being said it can take a lot of effort to keep all of the numbers straight especially when the company expands and grows. This is why fortune 1000 companies are extremely difficult to manage.
A normal person can't just walk in and manage a major company's financial records and transactions. It takes years of knowledge, experience, and patience to work in this type of job. Having a good sense of accounting and numbers is not only a good thing it is a requirement. You also have to have good foresight and give sound financial advice to the companies CEO.
What you do can affect the amount of job openings that your company has as a whole. While you don't govern the decisions directly you do influence what happens heavily. Aside from the skill and mindset requirements you also have to be willing to work long hours. This is why there are so few people seeking CFO job employment.
You may not think balancing books can be difficult but in reality it can be very taxing over long periods so you need to have good stamina. When looking for a new CFO, companies will first look at your resume and then your criminal record. It's not exactly good business practice to higher someone who's not up to the task or has a tendency to embezzle money.
That being said if they do hire you they will watch you like a hawk while you're there until you show that you can handle the tasks set before you. This applies to all companies that need a CFO but especially to Fortune 1000 companies. They didn't get to this status by making bad decisions in hiring practices or in fiscal management. Showing that you have what it takes can lead to a very long and high paying career.
Making yourself an invaluable commodity is important to landing a job of this caliber. This goes beyond the initial application process and you must always be on your toes. You will be in charge of the company's finances as well as managing all accountants and other personal in the department. However when something goes wrong it will all be put onto your shoulders, keep that in mind when giving advice and hiring recommendations.
