Job Cuts Coming to Atlanta


In Atlanta job cuts are coming — and they could total as many as 500 or more. The first cuts begin Thursday; however, as early as Tuesday night, several city shuttle bus drivers were told they would be laid off. Other sectors that will see cuts include solid waste, planning, judicial, Atlanta Police, Atlanta Fire, corrections, legal, human resources, procurement, and public works, according to 11Alive.com.

Airline Merger Would Bring Job Cuts


If Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines go through with their proposed merger, roughly 1,000 jobs are expected to be cut at the companies' headquarters. The two airliners have recently come before the House Judiciary Committee task force to answer questions about the possible merger. According to Delta CEO Richard Anderson and Northwest CEO Douglas Steenland, the two companies would be better off as a single unit, especially with soaring fuel prices.

Looks like cutting jobs has helped. Ford, the world's number three automaker, has announced significant profits for the quarter just ended. Because of the weak economy, many observers doubted Ford's ability to turn any profit at all. Should Unemployment Benefits Be Extended?


Because of the downturn in the economy and the rising unemployment rates nationwide, talk about unemployment insurance is buzzing, particularly when it comes to extending unemployment benefits. This, economists believe, would help stimulate the economy, and according to ABC News, if an extension had already been passed, "it would have gotten money into the marketplace almost immediately as people losing their jobs in the budding recession were able to keep drawing unemployment for an extra amount of time."

Rising Gas Prices Cause Airliner to Cut Jobs


After reporting a $537 million loss in its first quarter, airliner UAL Corp. plans on cutting 1,100 jobs and lowering its 2008 spending. Of the 1,100 jobs, 500 will be salaried and management jobs, and 600 will be union jobs.

Unemployment in California


According to a California Employment Development Department report, California's unemployment rate jumped to 6.2% "after seasonal adjustments." The reason for this high rate? The job market hasn't created enough new jobs to balance out the number of people losing jobs. And because of "California's eroding job market," analysts say, the state has gone into recession.
