Dallas is the tenth largest city in the United States but the least densely populated city in the world. This strange contradiction makes it feel like a smaller community and creates a high quality of life for the local residents. All the amenities of a modern metropolis plus the fact that it's home to the world's largest wholesale market and a top tourist destination plus a leading business and financial center put it on Fortune Magazine's list of ''Most Livable Cities in the Nation'' several times.

There is a steady influx of immigrants into Dallas, mostly to fill the Dallas jobs that keep cropping up. The major employer is the service industry that takes in about thirty percent of the locals with the balance of their city's economy based on commerce, banking, energy, and transportation, telecommunications, and computer technology.

Starting out first as a farming community that relied heavily on the cattle ranches in Fort Worth, and its proximity to the Native American trade routes, it boomed with the building of the rail lines throughout the city. Cotton then took its turn at providing Dallas jobs and it became the biggest cotton market in the world, the petroleum discoveries then put Dallas at the center of the petroleum market.

Telecommunications joined the mix in the 1950s when communications, production talent, and engineering flooded the city. They still play a major part in the city's economy. The name ''Silicon Prairie'' came about because of the many telecommunication companies there, of which the major hub is still in Dallas. The Telecom Corridor has more than 5700 companies including Alcatel Lucent, Texas Instruments, Alcatel Lucent, Nortel Networks AT&T, Ericsson, Fujitsu, Rockwell, Nokia, Cisco Systems, Verizon Communications and Sprint.

Real estate then took its turn boosting the Dallas economy in the 1980s with the need for more jobs and housing. Unfortunately, the boom didn't last and it's only recently that there is significant growth in the real estate business.

Many goods are still manufactured in the city and it's still a good source of Dallas jobs. The biggest employer is Texas Instruments which employs 10,400 people at its corporate headquarters and chip plants. The Dallas -Fort Worth Metroplex boasts the huge concentration of corporate headquarters. Dallas can definitely call itself the shopping capital of America, because most of the shopping centers are built there. NorthPark which is second largest mall in Texas is also here. It's an obvious must-see for the many tourists that come to the city. The choices are many, from mega-malls to designer stores and budget-busting outlet stores.

Currently, a popular tourist destination and also a popular choice for business travel; the hospitality sector is another good source of Dallas jobs. One definite draw for tourists is the food! With such diverse choices such as the local specialty, Tex-Mex featuring fajitas, picante sauce and frozen margaritas, or local Texan food like chili and the ubiquitous steak house that spotlights Texas' most famous product, there are so many restaurants that, like with everything else, and there are more restaurants in Dallas per capita than there are in New York City.

In all actuality, Dallas is the most friendly and pleasant big little city you'll ever come across anywhere. In a place where the citizens take staunch pride in their communities, families, and friendships, this is one of the best places you can think of settling down. What I liked about the service is that it had such a comprehensive collection of jobs! I was using a number of sites previously and this took up so much time, but in joining EmploymentCrossing, I was able to stop going from site to site and was able to find everything I needed on EmploymentCrossing.
