While computer programmers, computer engineers, healthcare workers, and operations managers may be "the most in-demand professionals nationwide," according to Business 2.0 Magazine, they may not agree with your career tastes. - Disease mapper: Before becoming one of these, you'll need either a PhD or a master's in a tech field as well as sufficient knowledge of a certain disease. The hours are flexible and the travel plans include exotic locations. The job includes "using the latest satellite imagery, cheap computing, big databases, and free tools like Google Earth to show how epidemics spread around the globe." Now hiring are universities, governments, the United Nations, and some consultancies. Current pay? $40,000-$150,000.
- Robot programmer: If you like to travel, help customize machines, and interact with people, then robot programming may be your niche. With a current salary ranging from $40,000-$100,000, robot programmers need an "associate degree in a technical field and extensive training." Matt Zeigler, 35, who went from working at a forklift manufacturing firm to working for an industrial robot manufacturing company in Ohio, divides his time between working behind a PC and traveling as a salesman, engineer, and installer for his company. Currently hiring? ABB, Fanuc, Motoman, Panasonic, and Toyota.
