California wildfires and the writers' strike have helped lead to a higher than expected amount of people filing for unemployment benefits. According to the Labor Department, "the number of applications for jobless benefits jumped by 20,000 to 339,000, the highest total in a month" — double what analysts expected. Two thousand job losses can be attributed to a combination of the California wildfires (because businesses had to close and lay off workers) and the writers' strike, which has put a hold on some television production.
