According to John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, "For those lucky enough to be hired in November and December, any hopes for a permanent position will likely go unfulfilled…Over the past several years, retailers have cut more workers in January and February than they hired in the preceding three months."
In 2006, the retail jobs total was increased by 721,200 for the holidays only to fall by 818,000 in the beginning of 2007.
But what hopeful hires can do is prove to the company that they are indispensable. "Show up for work early, offer to work extra hours, do more than what is asked of you and — most important &mdahs; make sales."
Also, look beyond retail for holiday jobs. Try delivery services like FedEx and UPS, or restaurants, catering services, hotels, and tourist destinations, such as ski areas, beach resorts, entertainment destinations, etc.
