The idea to open the recruiting centers comes after Sheraton struggled to hire 406 cooks, housekeepers, and front desk clerks. And it's working. After Starwood Hotels & Resorts, which runs Sheraton, opened two other centers in Fort Lauderdale and Chicago, positions were quickly filled — 31 out of 64 jobs.
"It's an interesting comment on the Houston job market," said John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray & Christmas. "They must find the people who work in the malls good workers for hotels. They already find the commute acceptable, the pay is about the same, and they have the customer-service skills hotels need."
