Throughout the year Lockheed Martin plans on cutting 600 jobs, in addition to the 250 it plans to cut in April. And on January 30 the company sent a memo to its employees, letting them know that 850 engineers will be cut from their current project, the F-35 fighter program. All of these cuts, said Lockheed Martin, are necessary to continue into the production stages of the program.

"It's important to note that this transition has always been part of our program plan," said Dan Crowley, executive vice president and F-35 program general manager, regarding the layoffs. "Many of our SDD design tasks are complete, and we're getting ready...to accelerate on the production side."

Lockheed Martin will provide those who will be laid off with a 60-day notice.
