Silicon Valley, California, is losing its middle class. According to reports, between 2002 and 2006, the region's middle-class workforce shrank by 46%, a loss of more than 50,000 middle-class jobs. The jobs that are disappearing include secretarial, clerk, and customer service positions, whose pay scales range from $30,000 to $80,000.

What problems might a disappearing middle-class workforce bring? According to economist Doug Henton, "If you lose the middle, it's harder to support the top."

However, there are some positives here. In comparison to the rest of the country, Silicon Valley remains quite wealthy, with a 57% higher per capita income than the national average.
