As the economy slows and milk costs rise, Starbucks hopes the job cuts will help strengthen its business. According to chief executive Howard Schultz, "We have to step up to the challenge of being strategic as well as nimble as our business evolves. Unfortunately, we have not been organized in a manner that allowed us to have a laser focus on the customer."
Along with job cuts, Starbucks plans to cut back on opening new stores. In 2008, the company will open 1,175 U.S. stores, roughly 425 less stores than previously planned.
