As described by Brian Dowling, spokesman for Safeway grocery stores, the company's recent job cuts are ''modest staff reductions.'' Modest equals close to 400 cuts, 69 of which have been made at its Pleasanton headquarters and many of which are administrative positions. Fortunately for those working in the grocery stores, no cuts will be made there.

"That's where the vast majority of our 201,000 employees work," said Dowling.

According to chief executive Steve Burd, "We began a very concentrated effort to sort of return to some of our core strength, which has been cost reduction over the years, and so we have put in place a very aggressive cost-reduction effort for 2008."

"It's important that the company stay focused on expense control and the adjustments made…show a determination to keep profitability strong and build on our current momentum," said Dowling regarding profits.
