Along with layoffs, newspapers have had to sever portions of their companies just to stay afloat. According to a former tech reporter for the Mercury News, "I guess the worst thing that could happen is the business could fall off a cliff the way the music business did."
And according to a study recently released by the Project for Excellence in Journalism, things could be heading that way. Newspaper sections that have suffered the most include real estate, help wanted, and automotive sections. There has also been a sharp drop in average circulations — 2.5% for dailies and 3.5% for Sunday editions.
