After bidding on Italian airliner Alitalia SpA for $1.18 billion, Air France has announced that it would be cutting the former's workforce. Air France plans on cutting 2,100 jobs, despite the Italian company's objections. Specifically, the airliner plans on cutting 1,600 of Alitalia's airline jobs and 500 ground-services and maintenance unit jobs.

According to eight out of nine Alitalia unions, "The proposal is still insufficient."

Nelson Ferrera, a spokesman for the union Anpac said, "The plan is unacceptable. The talks are over for us."

And Marco Veneziani of the Uilt union said, "If this will be the final proposal, we will return it to the sender. I believe all the other unions will not accept the new proposal. If Alitalia workers have to sacrifice themselves for France, then it is better they do as in the US and become shareholders and sacrifice themselves for their own flag carrier."
