As one of the nation's oldest cities and a de facto regional capital, Boston has a long established economy and as such, the Boston employment outlook is strong even in the face of the economic turmoil which has buffeted much of the country.

As the capital and the largest city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Boston enjoys the economic and cultural benefits that a city of its size and history typically offer to residents. One of these benefits is that residents generally have an easier time when looking for Boston jobs than do employment seekers in search of new opportunities in areas of the country which have been hit harder by the current recession.

Boston was founded all the way back in 1630, giving this city a longer history than virtually anywhere else in the United States (a few which beat Boston out in this regard are St. Augustine, Florida, Newport News, Virginia and New York City, just in case you were wondering). Along with this history comes a highly developed and diversified economy which ensures that jobs in Boston are available in a number of different industries.

One of the things which the Greater Boston area is known for is of course, its universities and other institutions of higher learning including MIT, Harvard, Emerson College and Tufts University, to name just a few of the many colleges which are located in and near the city of Boston. This concentration of educational institutions means that there are many Boston employment opportunities in this sector, as well as in the many businesses in the region which make their living providing for the needs of these institutions and their student bodies.

Along with education, the medical sector forms one of the largest sources of jobs in Boston and the surrounding metropolitan area. From Tufts Medical Center to the Children's Hospital of Boston, the New England Baptist Hospital to Brigham and Women's Hospital, there is certainly no shortage of Boston job opportunities in the healthcare industry. The confluence of many high quality medical facilities and colleges in the city has made Boston a hub for medical research, pharmaceuticals, genetic research and other life sciences work - if your background is in medicine or the life sciences, then Boston is a city which you'll certainly want to think about relocating to (if you don't already live there) in the course of your job search.

While it's not a financial center on the order of New York City or London, Boston is home to a number of companies in the banking and finance industries, including Sovereign Bank, Fidelity Investments and Bank of America. Given the presence of these large players in the industry, there are a relatively large number of Boston employment opportunities in the financial sector, yet another avenue to explore when you're in the market for Boston jobs.

Publishing is also a major industry in Boston, with the publishing houses Beacon Press, Little, Brown and Co., Houghton Mifflin and others located in the city. For those with professional experience in the publishing industry, Boston stands as one of the best cities in the country for finding publishing jobs and many people with an interest in the field find themselves hired by one of these companies as a result of their search for jobs in Boston.

High technology companies have also made Boston a center for jobs in technology from information technology to the design and manufacture of sophisticated electronic equipment. As far as US cities are concerned, Boston ranks in the top five as having an economy which is geared towards new growth industries in the technology sector. Given the presence of top schools like MIT and Harvard, however, this is perhaps to be expected and the city is one of the most popular destinations for skilled workers in search of jobs in this field.

There are a great number of different options available to job seekers for Boston jobs, with opportunities existing for virtually everyone, regardless of their particular area of expertise or their interests. If you're just out of school and looking for your first professional opportunity, looking to take a step forward in your career or interested in transitioning from your current career path into a new industry, then Boston is definitely the place to be.
