Health care remains one of the few industries showing strong growth in hiring during the current recession, and the Mayo Clinic is no exception. This year’s Fortune Magazine list of the “100 best companies to work for” focused on companies that are adding jobs and helping employees find ways to weather the economic downturn. For the 7th year in a row, the Mayo Clinic made the list, coming in at #55.

Interestingly, the Mayo Clinic started out as a nickname for the hastily put together hospital in Rochester, built through a reluctant partnership between Dr. W.W. Mayo and the Sisters of Saint Francis, after a tornado devastated the community. Dr. Mayo's two sons, also doctors, performed the first and subsequent surgeries in the small hospital. The Mayo brothers practiced a new form of surgery, called Listerism, and soon drew the attention of other doctors around the country. Physicians flocked to the clinic to watch the brothers operate and to learn the new methods, and it was the medical community, not the hospital itself, that began calling it first ''The Mayo Brother's Clinic'' and then eventually just ''The Mayo Clinic''

Today, The Mayo Clinic has over 1700 doctors working in hospitals in Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida along with smaller clinics in five states. In addition to the recognition from Fortune Magazine, The Mayo Clinic has also received the Platinum Award from the National Business Group on Health, for their healthy living programs for employees. The Platinum Award follows five straight years of receiving the Gold Award from the same organization.

The Mayo Clinic has an extensive section on its web site for job seekers, making it easy to search for and apply for jobs throughout the organization.

Whole Foods

With modern emphasis on green industries and organic foods, companies like Whole Foods Markets are thriving. Whether you're looking for part time or full time employment, Whole Foods is a great place to focus some of your attention. It would be impressive enough to say that Fortune Magazine named it #18 on the annual list of ''The 100 Best Companies to Work For'' but even more impressive is that the company has made that list for thirteen straight years now.

Whole Foods employees enjoy a broad spectrum of benefits, and every three years the employees participate in setting up the benefits package through a company wide vote. Current benefits include medical and dental, paid time off, disability and life insurance, flex accounts for health care, stock purchase plans, retirement accounts and more.

Hiring decisions are made on a store level, and applicants can apply in person or through the centralized website. Existing employees participate in the process throughout training and orientation by nominating trainees to become team members and then voting. The company maintains a strong policy of internal promotion and publicizes openings for advancement to existing team members through an internal website.

In addition to being a great place to work, Whole Foods is also a top choice among job seekers that want to support their community. Whole Foods stores take active roles in fostering community development and also pride themselves in providing environmentally responsible products along with healthy and organic choices for food.

Sovereign Bank

As part of the Santander Group, Sovereign Bank serves 80 million customers in 40 countries, and is one of the leading banking institutions in the Northeast United States. In 2008, Euromoney Magazine named Sovereign Bank the ''Best Bank in the World''. Since joining the Santander Group, Sovereign Bank has become one of the world's five largest banks by profit.

Its history stretches back to Pennsylvania, 1902, when it was founded as a savings & loan to help textile workers become homeowners. Today it operates branches and ATM's throughout New England and through its association with the Santander Group, reaches a global clientele abroad.

Current job listings range from part time teller positions to executive positions and plenty of middle management opportunities are available as well. Employees enjoy a broad spectrum of benefits including health care plans, retirement plans and educational opportunities. Corporate culture emphasizes a healthy work/life balance and Sovereign Bank has several programs to assist employees in making the most of their time off including payment assistance for health club memberships, vacation travel assistance, and a variety of personal well being plans.
