You must get yourself well organized to stand a chance against the tough competition in the current job market. Here are tips for you before you attend an interview:

Research the company

Before attending an interview, you should thoroughly research the potential company and get information as much as possible on its services, products, customers and competition. This preparation helps you get a grip over what the prospective employer expects from you. You stand a better chance to sell yourself if you have complete knowledge of the company. Know the culture and work ethics of the company so that you can adjust yourself with the job and enjoy it.

Look smart

Don a dress that is suitable for the industry and the position you are entering into. The dress must be spotless. Though the company has casual work environment, you should not go to the interview shabbily dressed. Your dress should show your confidence. Feel good and others respond in the same fashion.

Be well prepared

Be ready to meet any exigency. Take along extra copies of your resume, references and paper to jot down notes. Have a list of questions to put at the end of the interview.

Be punctual

Don't be late for an interview. Get the correct address of the place of interview and allow some extra time for searching the place. Be there 10 to15 minutes before the interview.

Be confident

To show you are confident, you should give a firm handshake. There must be plenty of eye contact with the interviewers. You must speak clearly and distinctly.

Be an alert listener

Listen carefully to whatever is spoken. You must be alert enough to read in between the lines as what is not said is perhaps more relevant than what is expressed.

Understand what is asked

Many job seekers don't think about answering the question asked. Listen to the question and answer it. If you can't get the question, don't hesitate to say, “Can I have the question again please?”

Be specific

Don't weave vague stories about your background. Give direct and specific answers when you are quizzed about your background. Prepare well for giving a convincing account of your background. Speak about your accomplishments and uniqueness. Your past is an indicator to your future performance.

Take advantage of the opportunity

Many hesitate to ask questions. Don't miss the opportunity to get information about the company and the job you seek. Your inquisitiveness shows your interest in the company and the job.

Follow up

Following up an interview either through email, regular mail or through phone call is a chance for you to remind the interviewer of your traits that you would bring to the company. Don't miss the chance to sell yourself.

There is no way to know how the interview goes and what it offers you. Follow these rules and you will be able to showcase your positive traits.
