The Interview: Keep Your Guard Up

Everything has gone well with the interview and it is almost certain you will get the job. You are in a good mood and having a harmless conversation with a potential colleague and tell him that you can't wait to get cleared by the out-of-touch CEO and others. Maybe you aren't meaning anything. If this bit of out-of-guard conversation reaches the potential employer you lose your chances.

Almost all let their guard down when once they feel good. But a job seeker can't afford to let his guard down. Unless you are careful you may ruin your chances yourself. Follow these tips to be on guard.

Don't appear relaxed

You are mistaken if you feel the interview is going on the expected lines and you can be relaxed. You may forget that you are at an interview and you may say something that shouldn't have been said. An interview is a ritualized format for a delicate interaction. The worst mistake many make is to get too comfortable at interviews. If you appear relaxed, you are unintentionally creating an impression that you don't care whether you get the job or not.

Many interviewees slump in the chairs thinking they must appear relaxed. Better you sit right at the edge of the chair. Normally interviewees get relaxed at the wrong time when they think that they landed the job and stop thinking they are being interviewed. You should maintain a difference throughout the interview and don't think the interviewer is your best friend-he isn't.

A first date

You must present your best foot forward as you do on your first date. When you feel that you are becoming friendly, you may disclose distasteful things about you. You should not go into that trap and begin talking about your ailments or your financial problems.

Don't ramble

When nervous some talk too much and sometimes talk about irrelevant things. To avoid such a situation you should practice. Jot down potential questions and arrange for a mock interview taking help from your friend or relative.
Be early

Very often jobseekers don't have time to check whether they look okay. Better reach the interview location 15 minutes early and visit the wash room. To get out of any tension, just stretch and yawn. This simple exercise helps you avoid slip-ups.

Don't to be rude to anybody

Nowadays employers get feedback from those you have met. If you are rude to any one of them, the potential boss knows about it. Be polite with assistants, receptionists and everyone whom you meet.

Don't drink

Sometimes interviews are conducted over dinner or lunch or at other social events that may include alcohol. You shouldn't touch any drinks when you are being interviewed. You can politely tell the interviewers, "I occasionally drink but I prefer iced tea today." Alcohol makes you let your guard down.

Avoid controversial topics

Avoid religion, politics and other hot subjects. Don't think you will win the game by discussing same sex marriages or stem-cell research. Confine yourself to your job, your aspirations, your accomplishments et al.
