A job seeker is waiting in the lobby for his interview. His heart beats are faster than usual. The interviewer is coming and the candidate has to wipe his hand before shaking hands.

This is an interview scenario in company lobbies. Interviews are stressful for many. Why do interviewees become stressful? Because they fear rejection and everybody wants to be selected. So interviews make them sweat a lot.

The key

But how does one get over such an interview tension? The key to get out of interview tension is changing your attitude. Job interview is not like an appointment with a dentist who may inflict pain. It is nothing but conversation with another person. In the worst situation, you may not get the job. Think that it is not the right job for you and it wasn't the last chance for you.

You can get over the fear if you think that an interview is a two-way process. If you think that you are interviewing the employers who in turn are interviewing you, meaning you are trying to understand whether the job is the right one for you and the hiring managers visualizing whether you are right fit for the job. What appears good may not be so. Hence research whether the company is suitable for you and whether you would like to spend most of your life there.

Breathing exercises

The best way to handle stress is to take a deep breath. You should practice breathing exercises before you attend an interview so that you can quietly resort to this breathing technique when you are struck by interview stress. Interviews may even cause panic attacks if the fear is very strong. You can as well attend yoga sessions and visit meditation centers to practice techniques to overcome stress. This preconditioning does wonders in dealing with interview anxiety.

Don't get dejected

Pre-interview preparation is absolutely necessary. You might have attended half a dozen interviews in the past two months and you might have been a runner up twice but not has received any offer. Don't get dejected.

These days competition is very tough and rejection is perhaps the order of the day. You must do everything possible to sell yourself through serious preparation. Consider yourself as a product and showcase what you can do for the employer. Can you successfully stage a performance without practice? There is no point in fearing the interview. Make serious preparation and you feel confident to face any interview.

You might have attended many interviews and didn't get any offer. You may feel defeated and your self-esteem is getting hurt. But don't take it personally. There may be many factors that affect one's chances. You know you were lucky to reach that level -interview. How many do get the chance of attending an interview? Wait for the right job and right company.
