Job seekers should keep in mind that interaction with an employer usually lasts only a few minutes. However, there is also a chance they will want to interview you on-site that very same day. So be prepared!
JobsOnline has developed a checklist of essential tips to help you succeed during your next career fair.
Pre-Register
Try this tactic to get a jump-start on your competition. The idea behind registering in advance is that it allows employers to prescreen applicants and possibly set up interviews the day of the fair. It's not a guarantee you'll get noticed, but every little bit helps.
Research
Obtain a list of the companies in attendance prior to the event and highlight those you wish to visit. By narrowing the field, you will increase your chances of meeting employers which are of high interest to you, as opposed to aimlessly walking booth by booth. After picking your top choices, research each company, so when you speak to one of their representatives, you appear knowledgeable and well informed.
Attire
Dress professionally, as if you were interviewing for a job and remember to select comfortable shoes since you will be on your feet for several hours. Also, don't forget to strategically place your nametag so it is easily visible as you meet and greet people.
Resume
Bring plenty of copies of your resume. If you have multiple interests or job objectives, make sure you bring enough of each version and keep them organized, so when you meet the employer you have the appropriate one in hand. You should also have scannable resumes available in case it is a preferred format by the company.
Strategy
Arrive early and survey the land before it is flooded with eager job seekers like yourself. If you are nervous, try approaching a company that is not one of your top picks, so you can practice and build up your confidence level. Always ask for a business card after speaking to a representative and make yourself more memorable by re-visiting those on your hotlist before leaving. Thank them again for their time and reinforce your interest in having a formal interview on-site.
Interviewing
Plan what you want to say ahead of time by focusing on the type of work you are seeking, your background/experience and professional objectives. Be quick, decisive and concise, especially with employers that may have a line of people at their booth. Remember, you only have a few minutes to sell yourself. Don't be afraid to show your assertive side by asking what you need to do in order to obtain a formal interview.
Networking
This is a great opportunity to meet with fellow colleagues, exchange job information and leads, as well as chat with members of professional organizations and employment agencies in attendance. Bring your business card along so you can swap with people, you never know what kind of job opportunities may result from this interaction.
Follow-up
Don't procrastinate! Send out a thank you letter to everyone you had an opportunity to meet. Briefly restate your interest in the company and qualifications for the position as well as your flexibility to schedule an on-site interview.
