Practice Early
Some of the firms start their interview process for students in the sophomore year. By the time seniors and juniors are interviewed, many of them have already met with the firm executives and managers. Check the website of the company for summer internships, campus visits and special events. During your senior year, submit a resume to the company. Avoid overstating your credentials.
You can get more information on how to apply through the company website. You can also have a contact or alumni submit your resume to the company.
First Impressions are Important
You would be called for a campus interview if you clear the first cut. The interviewer would judge you on your appearance so ensure that you wear a conservative shirt and a dark suit with tie. Avoid earlobe piercings, sneakers and flip-flops. Arrive early. These firms conduct behavioral interviews and expect students to explain a few scenarios where they produce results for their clients. A good candidate would be able to provide examples from experience as committee or chair heads for many campus activities.
The Next Round
Those who seem to be disinterested or are inappropriately dressed get cut first. You will have to be ready to tell the interviewer why you are interested in this position. You can check the website of the company to get acquainted with it. Research well to get an idea about what the company does and the activities it pays emphasis on.
While the career center of the school would help you, you should also formulate questions of your own. If you fail to make the
cut, don't get disappointed. Students that make the cut would be invited to the office of the company for the second round of interview. Before this interview, candidates are expected to complete a career profile online in most cases.
Meeting in Person
The next interview round may include a few behavioral interviews with managers and partners of the firm along with credit and criminal background checks. Poor credit can derail you so it would be best to be direct with the interviewers about your past problems.
The interview at this point would be aimed at getting to know the candidate better. They may assess agility and ask you questions on networking, relationships and problem solving. You may also be asked for lunch with hires from the last year and other candidates. You would still be interviewing while you eat. You may be asked a few personal questions during lunch such as why you chose the school.
Consulting requires good social skills so manners and class distinction can be a problem. Read up on business and social etiquette before the interview and ask your career center for advice.
