It is almost impossible to avoid interview traps. Here are a few examples of such traps:

Interview and interrogation

Many job seekers think they will be interrogated at interviews. In an interrogation one person asks all the questions. An interview is a two-way business conversation in which both the interviewer and the interviewee participate.

Turn your weaknesses into strengths

At many interviewers you are asked "What are your weaknesses". Experts advise you to highlight a weakness and turn it into your strength. For example you may say "I am a perfectionist." The interviewer may not be impressed with your answer as he might have heard such an answer umpteen times. You better highlight one of your skills you want to upgrade and clearly explain how you are doing that. Interviewers are not interested in your weaknesses. They would very much like to know as to how well you can present your skills.

Failing to ask questions

At the end of every interview, the candidates are asked if they have any questions. The worst mistake is to say that he has no questions. No-questions answer shows the applicant is not interested in the job and he has not prepared well. Employers are more impressed with the questions one asks and how one showcases his skills. Before attending any interview make a list of questions, like "Can you please tell me about your career curve?" Everybody likes to talk about themselves and you can be safe in asking such a question.

Inventory of you skills

Many candidates do a lot of research into the company, but they don't do anything to focus their talent. Before you attend an interview list your skills and accomplishments and plan the strategy as to how you should present them.

The cell phone

Keep your cell phone in silent mode. It won't be appropriate to have a ringing cell phone at an interview.

After the interview

After sending a thank-you letter to the interviewer, it is a good idea to follow it up with either a question or some additional information about your talents, or a recent press release of a competitor. The purpose of this exercise is to keep your interviewer's memory fresh.
