This is an experience that one selected candidate actually went through on her first day at work. During the orientation function, when all the new employees were being taken through their paces and being made to feel comfortable, her new supervisor called out her name and asked her to join her on the stage.

Slightly apprehensive at being singled out, she gingerly made her way to the stage. Imagine when, the supervisor shook her hand and commended her for being the only one, of several interviewed, who had sent a thank-you note after her interview.

A single timely step had already made her a known face and ingratiated her to her new employers.

It seems incredible, but there is absolutely no doubt that a simple note of appreciation will reflect very constructively on your candidacy for the job that you are seeking.

Enumerated here are the reasons why we think so: Read on.
  1. A Thank-You Note Denotes Respect, Courtesy and Civility

Sadly, the world has become very materialistic and our busy lives leave no time for social niceties. We fail to recognize favors done to us. We take them as a matter of course and simply overlook thanking our benefactors. By sending a thank-you note after an interview, you leave your interviewer in no doubt that you appreciate the time he has given you. Whatever, pre-interview research you may have done, nothing beats the first-hand knowledge that you garner after an interview.

  2. Most Applicants Don’t Send Them. When You Do, You Join An Exclusive Group

It's appalling and speaks woefully about our falling moral standards, but the majority of job applicants fail to send post-interview thank-you notes. Nobody knows why? Experts and recruiters are crying themselves hoarse, insisting that you must send one, yet most don’t think that it is worth their time and effort. Though estimations vary, it is found that only 5 out of a 100 applicants send a thank you note. By sending a thank-you note, you put yourself on an exclusive list, far away from the herd.

  3. A Thank-You Note Provides A Redressing Platform For Mistakes During The Intervie

Chances of leaving an interview fully content and satisfied are extremely rare. That can only happen, not because of your performance, but the interviewer being so impressed that he offers you the job then and there. Most leave their chairs with doubt and uncertainties gnawing at their entrails. Wish I had not said that? Why did I not say it? How could I forget? How you wish you had a chance to redeem yourself. Wish you could do that. An interview thank-you letter gives you the chance to do just that. After the initial words of appreciation, you can address these issues in the second paragraph.

  4. Interview Anxiety And Nervousness Causes Temporary Amnesia

You can rehearse your lines a million times. Memorize verbatim what your former boss said about you? Ensure that the certificate of merit given to you by federal agencies is in your portfolio – yet after the interview, you find you have fluffed your lines and that the all important document, instead of occupying pride of place in your portfolio, you forgot on the mantelpiece. It’s maddening, it’s frustrating, but the damage has been done. The thank you note will give you a chance to undo the damage, if not totally, at least a part of it.

Start your second Para saying "After our discussion, it occurred to me that I forgot to tell you about _________," and go on to mention whatever you had forgotten.

  5. A Thank-You Note Exhibits Your Written Communication Skills

During the interview the interviewer has been apprised of your vocal and oral skills. Through you thank-you note, your interviewer will evaluate how you handle yourself on paper. Whilst speaking, a few Uhms and Ahs are overlooked, but the written word has to be crafted well. Concise, to the point, correct spellings and grammatically error-free letters will send a strong message that you will be a valuable tool to interact and communicate with company's potential clients, customers and vendors.

Whilst thank-you notes may not actually get you the job, based on the note alone, it certainly gets the interviewer thinking. Moreover, they cost nothing and are neither time-consuming. There is no foreseeable reason, why they should be put off more than a few hours after the interview
