This does not mean that you need to know all the jargons of all areas. All you need to do is speak specific to their functional area and share your real life experience relating the same and this is what most of the successful people do. Now let’s look how you can make your interview tailor made meeting needs of your interviewer:
Share your Experience:
In a work place there are people with diverse nature and functions and few things do not depend on this cross functional effort. At the time of Job interview a functional head may interview you. At this point you may give them your past experiences in their area and how it was helpful to you to accomplish a task and this may leave a good impression on their mind.
Let’s take an example: If you are into Finance department and a person in Marketing is interviewing you then you can tell him after making strategies and plans how they were achieved by the sales and marketing in achieving the profit, increasing the sales, market value, etc. This will certainly show that you value the existence and importance of other departments and can accomplish tasks hand in hand.
Share your Success:
The quote “Even eagles need a push.” is applicable to everywhere today. It’s a team as a whole that puts efforts and is success of all not an individual.
You should always add contribution of others in your success. Let’s say you are into sales and someone who is into marketing/advertising comes to meet you. Always make them feel their importance in your job and how their promotional activities made their selling easier and how their branding helped you to impress your customers.
Realize them their importance
Educate others about their importance and role in your success and how their efforts helped you climbing the ladder. This will have a positive impression on their mind which will help you in your future endeavors.
E.g. you are in to sales and an HR is interviewing you, then you may site examples of how human resource based principles help you to understand your customers behavior and how to deal with them.
Respect their efforts
Every human likes to get importance and gain interest of others. The same holds when it comes to an interviewer. If you show interest in their job they will feel you as engaging.
You can ask them their past experiences in their area and what challenges they face achieving their goals.
Make them feel special
Make them believe that you are a team player and always want a team effort and success.
All companies form teams to attain certain goals, so try to ask them their plans and strategies for team building and its enhancement.
A dynamic attitude is equally as important as a diversified personality and if you don’t want to miss out an important opportunity you need to be more adaptive and a team player. You must show that you value and appreciate everyone’s contributions and believe in attaining goals working hand in hand with others.
