Administrative professionals with near identical job descriptions can end up earning different salaries. Why this difference? Industry, location and employers are the three factors responsible for salary differences.

Here are tips to get reasonable compensation packages.

Financial industry: Financial industry is the best paymaster. Hedge funds, mergers and acquisitions, and investment banking sectors head the list of top paymasters of the industry. There is a hierarchy where support salaries are concerned. If you are a broker's assistant, you get commission on top of the salary.

Legal field: After the financial industry, the legal industry pays the best salaries to the administrative support staff. This industry does not have any profit-sharing incentives like the finance sector. But the profession has high pay structures coupled with overtime remuneration.

Glamorous industries aren't that glamorous: Glamorous industries don't pay glamorous salaries. People enter the industry with the hope of getting a permanent footing. Fashion, publishing and advertising industries pay the support staff the lowest salaries. They should be satisfied with perks like clothing allowance or tickets to shows or alluring prospects.

Geography and salary: The city where you work is the deciding factor of your salary. Salaries vary in different parts of the country. Salaries are the lowest in southern cities and highest in northern, western and coastal cities. New York City and San Francisco are the highest paying cities.

Personal assistant: Another option for administrative professionals is to work as personal assistants and can make a six-figure salary but they have to really sweat it out. There are no fixed hours for them. They should be ready to attend a call at any time. Personal assistants can't have plans of their own. Even if they have any, they must be prepared to cancel them at a short notice. They are expected to be on their toes all the time to deal with the intimate details of their bosses' lives. Mostly singles go for these jobs. Usually they say quits the moment they get married or have children. But it is, indeed, a lucrative option.
