Men and women are facing increasing responsibilities from two ends. On one end is the child care for which only 15 percent of workers had access to employer assistance in 2008 and on the other the elder care as the survival rate of the aged has been raising. Consequently women are still shouldering the responsibility for child care for the most part. So is the case with elder care.

Because of this additional burden, some are looking for flexible work schedules to be able to spend more time with their families and retain a competitive career.

Here is how you can persuade your boss for a flexible schedule.

Find out the culture

See any one in your company is getting a flexible schedule. If so talk to him. If you find there is none, find out if others are interested in such a program. Then talk to HR people to know whether flexible schedules are in the list of benefits. It is crime to be ignorant of what you are entitled to. If your company doesn't allow such a benefit try to create one with the help of your colleagues.

Kinds of flexible schedules

Flexible work arrangements are in different forms. Some arrangements include a flexible start and an end time, compressed or extended work week. Some allow you to go early during the day to meet your commitments. Experts say the telecommuting, especially if it is not a daily affair, job sharing and reduced work schedules as flexible arrangements.

Choose from these options the one that suits you the best. But you must be careful that the option you select should not stand in your way to perform well. You must be honest in what you do. If you are not performing with regular schedules, your chances of of getting flexible schedules are slim.

You must present your case in such a way that it focuses on the benefits the company would get. Prepare a formal business plan and seek a meeting with the boss to explain to him the benefits for him and the company. You must vividly explain how you will be accomplishing your job tasks. Your plan should also underscore the fact that it won't make life difficult for your boss or colleagues.

Keep your word

Once the flexible schedule is accepted, take care to keep your word and perform. Go beyond your job objectives and set up examples to gauge your performance. Keeping deadlines on the home front and in the office is an index to your performance level. Check often with your boss to know she is satisfied with your results. After the flexible schedule is in place for six month review its success and if you find it is not working don't hesitate to get it changed.

Make an effort to avoid resentment from your colleagues. Communicate often with them and tell them and your boss where you are and what you are doing.

The best way to get support is to perform and communicating often.
Be flexible on your flexible schedule.
