Many believe that by working hard they reach their goals. If you work harder you achieve even more. Do you also think like that? If you say yah, perhaps you are wrong. There are many disadvantages to working too hard. If you are a workaholic, you may miss many a coveted promotion; you spoil your home life and you make more enemies. Evaluate yourself with the following parameters:

Are you busy or disorganized?

Are you going to your work early and returning late and yet you are producing the same as others. If that is a fact, you are labeled inefficient and disorganized. There are some who love to do a lot, but they don't bother about the quality of their work.

Try to finish your assignment in a reasonable time frame. Seek the help of your supervisor if you have perfectionism or time management issues and prioritizing things. Learn when to stop a task. Working longer doesn't mean working better.

Are you delegating or hoarding?

Do you want to move into management? If yes, you have to learn how to delegate work. You have to complete tasks in a time frame. If you have any problem in finishing a project, you must delegate it to other team members though you relish doing it. If you think you are making yourself indispensable by doing everything and you are the only one who knows how to do it, you are wrong. Management gurus attach a lot of importance to sharing information and helping colleagues. It is a valued skill.

Focus on completion of a job without compromising quality. Let your colleagues learn and shine. If you feel you don't have enough support, ask your boss to expand your group.

Is your plate full?

If you have gained the reputation of being the office workaholic, it is time for you to realize that you are not allowed to handle your dream project when it came because your boss thinks you are full and can't take on anything more. Always have some space to maneuver to handle new challenges. Professionals should have the knack to say no to certain things and yes to others.

Do you have friends?

Your workaholic nature is likely to turn once valued friends into enemies. They now think that you are making them look bad. Your colleagues may no longer like to collaborate with you on any project. Don't expect everybody to come early and stay late for meetings.

Do you work to live or live to work?

The best workers are those who have varied attainments and professionals out and out. Studies abound every year underscoring the importance of holidaying, hobbies and enjoying the leisure time. Do you give credence to those studies? If you don't, do it at least now. Your family and friends will be in your life a lot longer than you will hold most jobs. Enjoying leisure time passionately can give you a second career.
