In addition to your responsibilities you must also deal with workplace politics. Here are ideas to overcome road blocks common to office politics.

The power to say no: Many of us can't say no. We don't want to be labeled as unhelpful and always say yes.

In order to avoid confrontation at work, we nod our heads. But experts point out that the way to say no is to keep your emotions under control. Be firm and say no if necessary. You can do it gracefully also. Mind you, it is business and nothing personal is involved when we say no to something. If you become emotional it becomes harder for you to present your views.

You don't owe anybody anything to say no. If you think by saying no to your boss you may be inviting avoidable stress, tell him that your plate is full and what does he want you to take off from it. That is how you can deal with the situation with tact and without losing your cool.

How to win an argument: One disgusting thing you find in discussions is that your views are claimed by others. In such a scenario, it is better to talk less. Always thank the person for coming out with some ideas. Harmless phrases such as ‘that's an interesting point' and ‘I am listening' keep people happy and make them feel both of you are on the same side.

Bring them to your side: Even when you are not against your boss' viewpoint, you can face resistance at work. You can convince those who don't want to agree with your idea by trying a new approach to get the work done. If you are leading a project, you must convincingly put forth your point without frightening anybody. By focusing on the benefits only, you can get support from your team mates.

Accept their work and thank them: If you are grateful to your team mates for their contribution, they will be ready to do whatever you want them to do. Build a network that supports you.

Ask yourself who was responsible for the completion of the project and who went out of their way to help you and immediately thank them in a proper way. Send a ‘thank you' note or an invitation to an event.

A checklist for getting support: Don't make any unrealistic demands. Keep in mind the company culture and the available resources to draw from when you are thinking of an idea.

Whether it's a proposal for new software, a request for extra off or work from home, have plan to share with your boss. Explain to him its effects on the team and get an estimate for any purchases. Point out the benefits to you, the team and the company.

If you are on a project, get feedback from your colleagues and hear their comments objectively. They may support an initiative that has their contribution.
