If you are looking to apply for federal government jobs, it is important that you know what types of positions are most in demand. At present, the ten career paths below are positions for which the federal government has the most need for, in no particular order:

  1. Public Policy - Essential duties of the federal government include administering domestic programs and agencies, enforcing laws and regulations, defending the U. S. from foreign aggression and terrorism and representing U.S. interests abroad. Government employees in public policy are basically divided into 3 branches: legislative, judicial and executive.
  2. Intelligence - Personnel hired in this area are usually in the cutting edge of their technical discipline. Persons who are knowledgeable in multiple languages and cultures of other countries are most useful in intelligence. These federal employees work on the issues that affect the national security of America. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is a government agency that specializes in intelligence. FBI jobs usually require a background in law enforcement combined with other expertise.
  3. Biological Sciences - Biological scientists employed by the federal government are usually hired in government agencies that have something to do with the environment, such as the Environmental Protection Agency or those involved in research and development.

  4. Public Affairs - Federal government jobs in public affairs involve administering and performing work that establishes and maintains communication between federal agencies and the public, foreign and domestic. Federal workers in this field advise agency management on policy formulation and the potential reaction of the public on proposed policies.
  5. Accounting - Federal government jobs in accounting are numerous and the most sought after since almost every government agency has a need for accounting personnel. Accountants either advise, administer or perform accounting work related to the financial activities of private and quasi-governmental companies as well as government agencies.
  6. Healthcare - The largest occupational group in America today is healthcare with more than 13 million people employed in this field. This is projected to increase by 27 percent through 2014 to around 3.6 million jobs. Federal government jobs in healthcare are spread out among all the government agencies and currently number about 150,000.
  7. Engineering - Federal government jobs in engineering involve advising, administering or performing research and scientific work of a miscellaneous or special character. These jobs involve the application of engineering fundamentals in the strength analysis of materials and also the chemical or physical characteristics of these.
  8. Information Technology - These currently have a high demand as far as federal government jobs are concerned. IT professionals in government service are divided into several specializations such as data management, security and system maintenance.
  9. Homeland Security - The U.S. Federal government has been pouring billions into homeland security jobs ever since the World Trade Center bombing of September 11, 2001. A big portion of these funds are aimed at cyber terrorism, so applicants with backgrounds in computer science have a good chance, especially persons with expertise in biometrics, encryption and computer security have an edge. Homeland security jobs could be very difficult to apply for and those hired usually have had many years experience working in other agencies and have the highest credentials. Applicants for these jobs must be very patient and take note that most of the best and most important work is not done by government employees who are on the government's payroll, but instead by contractors. Many of the homeland security jobs exist outside the government so applicants must follow a trail of government contracts to see which private sector employers are working on Department of Homeland Security (DHS) related projects. Having a security clearance gives an applicant a better chance of being hired for homeland security jobs.
  10. Human Resources - We are in an era when most of the ''baby boomer'' generation is retiring so the staffing needs of most federal agencies require constant attention by entry level as well as experienced human resource specialists. Specialists are needed who have knowledge in a wide range of HR concepts, laws, policies, practices, precedents and regulations to provide HR management.
