The job

Chiropractors treat patients by manual manipulations (called adjustments) of parts of the body, especially the spinal column. This system of treatment is based on the theory that pressure on nerves that pass from the spinal cord to different parts of the body interferes with nerve impulses and their functioning, causing disorders in parts of the body. By means of certain manipulations of the vertebrae, the chiropractor seeks to relieve the pressure on specific nerves and thus remove the cause of a specific ailment.

Most chiropractors also employ x-rays to aid in locating the source of an ailment. They use supplementary treatment with water, light, or heat therapy and may prescribe diet, exercise, and rest. Drugs and surgery are not used in this system of treatment.

Newly licensed chiropractors often start their careers by working in salaried positions-as assistants to established practitioners or in chiropractic clinics.

Since a chiropractic practice can be conducted on a part-time basis, it is a good field for people with family responsibilities.

Places of employment and working conditions

Chiropractors often locate in small communities, with about half of all chiropractors practicing in cities of 50,000 or less. California, Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, and New Mexico have the most chiropractors.

Most chiropractors are in private practice, which allows them to schedule their own working hours. Evening and weekend hours are sometimes necessary to accommodate their patients.

Qualifications, education, and training

Manual dexterity rather than strength is necessary for a chiropractor. A keen sense of observation, and ability to deal with people, and a sympathetic manner with the sick are also important.

High school courses in science are important, and the two years of college required before entrance into chiropractic school must include chemistry, biology, and physics.

There are 14 chiropractic colleges that are accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education; three others are working towards accreditation. The four-year course of study emphasizes courses in manipulation and spinal adjustment, but most schools also offer a broad curriculum that includes basic and clinical sciences.

The first two years of study include classroom and laboratory work in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. The last two years are devoted to practical experience in college clinics. The degree of D.C. (doctor of chiropractic) is awarded upon completion of the course.

All chiropractors must be licensed to practice. In addition to a state board examination, licensing requirements usually include two years of college and the successful completion of an accredited four-year chiropractic course, as described above. Some states also require a basic science examination.

Potential and advancement

There are about 36,000 practicing chiropractors. This number will increase because the profession is gaining greater public acceptance. Enrollment in chiropractic colleges has increased in recent years. New chiropractors may find it increasingly difficult to establish a practice in areas where other practitioners are located; the best opportunities will be in areas with few established chiropractors.

Income

As in any type of independent practice, earnings are relatively low in the beginning. Experienced chiropractors earn about $64,000 a year, with many earning considerably more.
