There are a few things to keep in mind while taking care of your personal and professional life at the workplace. In terms of selecting friends and colleagues, you have to make some wise decisions which will help you towards a better professional life. It’s been said that you can select your friends but you can not select your colleagues; this is true. You have the right to choose your friends outside the office premise, but in terms of selecting the colleagues, yo don’t have much choice. Who choices your colleagues may be assigned to someone else, as mostly senior personnel or hiring managers will do this task instead of you. If you try to select who they will be, then it may create issues in two different ways; there’s a chance you may have good relationship with them further, or you may suffer due to this selection.

Example:

For example, someone is working with a company for a long time and he assumes that the rest of the people working in the same premise are good workers. That person then works better and he loves the people who are in the management segment. All of sudden, he comes up with a thought that there is a big issue, despite the positive image he managed to develop over time. The problem deals with the promotional issue; that person was not selected by the management for the promotion he was looking for and this hurt. This is the time when someone needs to assess where things went wrong for him. It's his excessive socializing as well as assumptions which have lead the way for this issue, and this may further put him in a stage where he may feel he is losing his job as well.

You would surely not like to go through the same thing:

This is the kind of situation that everyone would like to avoid. Avoiding it can be done while maintaining a professional distance at the office. This distance should be between you and your colleagues, and it should look normal, not avioded. Before you do this, you need to know whom you can call as a friend and whom you can call as a friendly colleague. These are the most precise, as well as definitive, queries and sometime it is tough to ascertain them. However, you have to address and solve it before it becomes a major problem at the office. There are a few ways that you can follow now in order to create positive as well as sustainable workplace friendships, and this will allow you to get ahead in your professional life with a better approach.
  • First you need to establish boundaries. That means you have to set limits in the office in terms of making friends and choosing friendly colleagues.

  • You are also required to handle and solve criticism as soon as possible.

  • You should have professional behavior in and outside of the office.
