1960s anti-Vietnam War slogan
One, two, three, four, we won't fight a corporate war.
1990s anti-Gulf War slogan
It was 1980 and Lorie was just out of college. This is her story. I was 22; exploring interviews and traveling electrical engineering positions, my flight was late. Rain was pouring down. The rented car's wind shield wipers didn't work. It took me three laps around the airport service road to find my way back for another car. I got to my motel late (an hour's drive away) and had to wake the couple running it. They had no reservation for me (supposedly made by the company) and no vacancy. The room they finally found me was thirty minutes farther away. I was stressed and knew I had to get up early. I got little sleep.
Then the company- They made optical sensors for bombs and missiles. My interviewer showed me actual Vietnam War footage and laughed all the way through it. I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone or a Woody Allen movie. I went home.
[Editor's note: Lorie's next interview was with Bell Labs. See "French, German & COBOL," page 107.]
